Waterfowlers make up a small percentage of hunters who get truly stoked when they see sleet, snow, and driving winds in the forecast. Cold weather kick-starts migrations from the north, and heavy precipitation + wind forces the birds to fly low, on the lookout for cover and safe-haven with other flocks, increasing the opportunity for sweet-talking waterfowlers to coax them into their decoy spreads.

The Refuge Parka was built for performance in the extreme conditions of the late season with its robust insulation package, durable waterproof materials, and an extensive feature set optimized for every moment of the hunt.

We’ve fit the Parka with plenty of room to layer over the Refuge Bibs or waders + Base-Layer and Transitional Outerwear (like Catalyst or Uncompahgre) to keep hunters comfortable from 30 degrees to well below zero. The Refuge outerwear system is carefully designed to help hunters from every flyway go farther and stay longer through the best, worst days in the field.

The First Lite Refuge Parka is hands-down one of the best pieces of late-season gear I’ve ever put on. I hunt in some brutal conditions — wind, sleet, snow, freezing temps — and this jacket handled everything without a problem. The insulation is legit warm without feeling bulky, and the outer material blocks wind better than anything I’ve used in the past.

What surprised me the most is the mobility. Most heavy parkas make you feel like you’re wrapped in a sleeping bag, but the Refuge still lets you shoulder a shotgun, set decoys, and move around without fighting your gear. The pockets are well thought-out, especially the chest pockets for hand warmth and the shell holders that are actually accessible with gloves on.

The Typha pattern blends perfectly in the marsh and flooded timber. I’ve already worn it on cold-weather duck hunts, and it kept me warm and dry even when everything else was frozen.

If you hunt waterfowl in true late-season weather and want something that’s durable, warm, and built with hunters in mind, the First Lite Refuge Parka is worth every penny. This is one of those pieces of gear you buy once and use for years.

The First Lite Refuge Parka in Typha (size Large) has exceeded every expectation I have for high-performance waterfowl outerwear. From frigid mornings in the blind to windy, soaking conditions on the water, this parka delivers rock-solid protection that keeps me warm, dry, and ready to hunt.

The design is extremely well thought out — plenty of accessible storage pockets, a comfortable and adjustable hood, and durable materials built to handle heavy brush and harsh climates. The insulation strikes the perfect balance: warm without being overly bulky, allowing for comfortable movement while shouldering a shotgun or setting decoys.

Pairing the Refuge Parka with the matching bibs creates a system that truly stands up to the worst the season can throw. First Lite continues to set the bar high with dependable gear that supports serious hunters in the elements. Highly recommend for anyone who refuses to let poor weather slow them down.
